Planning cinematography - Miss Miller

Cinematography is the art of movie photography, this includes both the shooting and development of the film but is usually used to refer to the use of camera angles and shots within a sequence. Cinematography plays a critical role within thriller films as it uses specific camera shots to evoke a feeling on the audiences behalf, it helps form a bond between the characters and audience, After identifying the significance of cinematography my group and i decided to plan what cinematography we plan to use and what affect it would have on the audience. Following this planning we have concluded what elements of cinematography would best suit our sequence.

A canted angle is a shot is where the frame is twisted sideways at an angle, this will be used when the victim is about to be attacked by the killer. The effect of this should convey to the audience that the situation is not quite right, so they situation seems twisted the camera angle may also represent how the antagonist is quite a twisted person and mentally unstable, the angle is used to show imbalance. An imbalance causes confusion and panic for the audience the canted angle will be used to create a greater reaction to what is going on. This is conventional to thrillers as the audience will be unsure of what is going on. Keeping the sense of anticipation.

This shot will be followed with another shot that is significant to the thriller genre. It will be a point of view shot, in this shot the audience will see the victim from afar. They will identify that the stalker is watching the victim from afar in order to prevent being caught. This hot has a huge impact on the narrative because it will be the

fist time we see the victim therefor will create suspense as the audience will be scared as the antagonists identity has not been revealed. A point of view shot is commonly used on thriller films. The point of view shot will also create excitement and force the audience to build a relationship with the characters and have empathy for the victim. This shot will connote that the victim is unaware that the antagonist is watching her due as this shot will show the antagonist standing behind objects so he is not spotted.

A tracking shot will be used when the victim walks past the antagonist unaware of who he is, the audience and the victim presume he is just another school boy. This means the camera will follow the victim walking as we get a quick glimpse of someone following her who is later revealed to be the killer. This means the characters become focused on, clarifying the significance of this scene. By using this camera technique the audience can easily identify this man as the killer when his identity is revealed instead of just being presented as an innocent bystander. This will create confusion for the audience as they will not see how significant the scene is until the killer is revealed at the end of the sequence, it will also reveal to the audience why the girl is paranoid presenting to the audience that she is always being watched and that she is never safe.

A close up will be used on the antagonists face when his identity is revealed. This means that the camera will focus on his face for a short period of time, showing nothing else in the frame. This highlights the presence of the antagonist as he is revealed to be someone the victim knew the whole time. By doing so, the audience are made to question the antagonists mental state, subtly showing how deranged this boy is stalking following and planning a murder onto one o his own friends. This shows the audience that the boy is dangerous, it causes the audience to feel tension as they have to wait to see the victims reaction. It also exaggerates the hidden identity as we see no clues or hits to who he is during the whole scene which builds up suspense, the audience left clueless until now. Overall this creates a relationship between the antagonist and our audience who may become frightful of this man.

  1. You have provided a basic analysis of the techniques you intend to use within your sequence, briefly mentioning when they will use and what you hope it will create.

    You need to:
    1) Explain exactly what these techniques will create for the audience and why/how
    2) Explain how they are conventional to the genre
    3) Explain how and why the audience are able to build a relationship with characters as a result
    4) Include a conclusion explaining how this has helped you prepare for filming and how you think the planning of the camera techniques has helped to ensure that your group will produce a more successful opening sequence
    5) Include screen shots of your examples
